A Scholar at the Han Court
Zhang Heng was born in 78 CE at Nanyang, in a prosperous region of the Eastern Han empire, into a family that had produced a governor but no great wealth. He went to the capital to study, declined early offers of official appointment, and spent years reading and writing rather than climbing. His early reputation was literary: his rhapsodies on the two capitals, Western and Eastern, are elaborate set pieces that took him a decade and are still read as among the finest examples of the form.
Around 115 he was appointed chief astronomer, a post in the imperial bureaucracy with duties that mixed observation, calendar calculation and the interpretation of omens. Han political theory held that heaven signalled its displeasure with a dynasty through eclipses, comets, floods and earthquakes, so the office was politically charged. Zhang argued for a cosmology in which the heavens enclosed the earth like the shell of an egg around its yolk, and he catalogued over two thousand stars in something above a hundred constellations.
Bronze, Water and Gears
He built an armillary sphere driven by water power, so that a model of the celestial sphere turned in step with the actual sky and could be consulted indoors, in daylight or cloud. He explained lunar eclipses as the moon passing into the earth's shadow and understood that the moon shines by reflected light. He also produced a mathematical estimate for the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, using the square root of ten, a value less accurate than what later Chinese mathematicians would obtain but arrived at independently.
In 132 he presented the instrument that made his name in world history: a bronze vessel roughly two metres across, its outside ringed by eight dragon heads each holding a ball, with eight open-mouthed toads below. When the ground moved, a mechanism inside, described in the sources only as a column and connecting rods, released one ball into one toad's mouth with an audible clang, indicating the direction of the disturbance. No original survives, and every modern reconstruction is a hypothesis about that missing interior.
A Verified Tremor and an Unhappy End
The History of the Later Han records that on one occasion a ball dropped and no one in the capital had felt anything, and the court accused him of failure. Days later a rider arrived from Longxi, several hundred kilometres to the northwest, reporting an earthquake. Historians accept the account as contemporary testimony while remaining cautious about the device's real sensitivity. A Chinese reconstruction in 2005 responded to earthquake waves in tests, but reconstruction cannot prove what the original mechanism was.
Zhang's career suffered from the same court politics his office served. He warned against the growing influence of palace eunuchs and of an apocryphal prognostication literature he regarded as fraudulent, and he lost ground to men more willing to tell the emperor what he wanted. He was moved sideways to a palace post, then out to a provincial administration, and died in 139 shortly after being recalled. He is remembered in China as a poet and mathematician as much as an engineer, and a lunar crater carries his name.
