The article behind the notes

In 1842, the Italian engineer Luigi Federico Menabrea published a French account of Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine. Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, translated it into English. At Babbage's suggestion, she added notes. Those additions became roughly three times the length of the original article.

The engine itself was never completed in their lifetimes. Yet its architecture contained ideas familiar to modern computing: a 'store' for numbers, a 'mill' to operate on them, and punched cards to direct a sequence of instructions. Lovelace's notes explained this difficult machine to a wider audience and explored what following such instructions might mean.

A program and a larger claim

Her Note G set out a procedure for calculating Bernoulli numbers. It is frequently described as the first published computer program, though historians debate how to divide credit between Lovelace and Babbage. The most useful conclusion is not a lonely-genius contest: their work was collaborative, and Lovelace made a distinctive intellectual contribution.

She separated the machinery from the meaning of its inputs. If numbers could stand for notes, letters or other relations, she reasoned, the engine might operate on those symbols according to rules. Her famous example imagined the machine composing elaborate music, provided the relationships of harmony could be expressed formally.

The limit she understood

Lovelace was also precise about what the engine could not do. It had no power to originate anything; it could perform what humans knew how to order it to perform. That caution still sits at the center of debates about automation and artificial intelligence.

Her achievement was conceptual. While the Victorian machine remained gears on paper, she saw a programmable medium. Computation, in her account, was not only faster arithmetic. It was a way of representing and transforming patterns.
