A Career in the Song Bureaucracy
Shen Kuo was born in 1031 at Qiantang, near modern Hangzhou, into a family of officials, and travelled widely with his father's postings before passing the imperial examinations in 1063. The Song state he entered was the most bureaucratically sophisticated in the world, and it assigned its educated men to whatever needed doing. Shen supervised hydraulic engineering on the Bian canal, drained silted waterways, organised the finance of the salt monopoly, and served as an envoy to the Liao court to negotiate a disputed frontier.
He allied himself with Wang Anshi, the reforming chancellor whose New Policies attempted state loans to farmers, price stabilisation and a reorganisation of the militia, and who was fiercely opposed by conservatives including the historian Sima Guang. Shen ran the Bureau of Astronomy, directed the imperial arsenals, and improved the design of crossbows and defensive works. He also took military command on the Xia frontier, and there his career ended: a subordinate's disastrous defeat in 1082 was charged to him, and he was demoted and eventually confined.
Brush Talks From Dream Brook
In enforced retirement at an estate he named Dream Brook, near Zhenjiang, he assembled the Mengxi Bitan, usually rendered as Brush Talks from Dream Brook. It is not a treatise but a collection of some six hundred entries, arranged loosely, covering whatever had caught his attention across a working lifetime: administration, music, poetry, painting, divination, anecdotes about colleagues, and a great deal of what would now be called science. He wrote it, he said, as conversation with his brush, having no one left to talk to.
The entries include the earliest clear description of a magnetic needle used for direction and the observation that it does not point exactly to true south, a recognition of magnetic declination centuries before it was noted in Europe. He described Bi Sheng's movable type of baked clay, invented decades earlier, in the only surviving account of it. He recorded relief maps he built in wood and wax, experiments on resonance in strings, the behaviour of the camera obscura and burning mirrors, and improvements to the armillary sphere and gnomon.
Reading the Earth and Its Time
His most striking passages concern the earth itself. Seeing bands of marine shells and ovoid stones in a cliff face far inland, he concluded that the escarpment had once been a shore and that the plains before it were built from silt carried down over ages. Finding petrified bamboo underground in a dry northern region where bamboo does not grow, he reasoned that the climate there must once have been different. Both arguments infer immense stretches of past time from ordinary physical evidence, an approach European geology reached much later.
He proposed a radically simplified calendar based on the solar year rather than reconciling lunar months, and was ridiculed for it; he predicted it would be adopted eventually, and something like it was, long after his death. He was not a lone genius so much as the sharpest observer in a state apparatus that already valued measurement, and he was a partisan in bitter factional fights whose losers wrote much of the history. He died in 1095. His book has never been out of scholarly circulation since.
