A prodigy in Bukhara

Ibn Sina was born around 980 CE near Bukhara, in present-day Uzbekistan, then capital of the Samanid emirs. Much of what we know of his youth comes from an autobiography he dictated to his student al-Juzjani, a rare and vivid document that is also self-fashioning, written to present its author as a philosopher who needed no teacher. In it he describes mastering logic, mathematics and medicine as a teenager, and winning access to the royal library after treating the Samanid ruler. Even discounted for pride, the record of what he wrote afterward makes the precocity believable.

His adult life was anything but settled. The Samanid state collapsed, and Ibn Sina spent decades moving between courts across Persia, serving as physician and twice as vizier, enduring political intrigue, a spell of imprisonment and at least one flight in disguise. He wrote constantly through the turbulence, often at night after official duties, dictating to students. He died at Hamadan in 1037. The itinerant career mattered: his books were composed as portable, comprehensive systems, designed to carry entire sciences within their covers wherever their author landed next.

Medicine as a system

The Canon of Medicine, al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, completed around 1025, organized the entire medical knowledge of his era into five books: principles, simple drugs, diseases organ by organ, general conditions such as fevers, and compound remedies. Building on Galen and Hippocrates and on generations of physicians in the Islamic world such as al-Razi, it prized clear classification and clinical observation, discussing the pulse, urine, surgical problems and the testing of new drugs. It was not modern medicine; humoral theory frames it throughout. It was, however, unmatched as an organized summary.

Translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona in the twelfth century, the Canon became a foundational textbook at universities including Montpellier and Bologna, and it remained on European syllabuses into the seventeenth century, longer than almost any other scientific work. In the Islamic world its authority lasted even longer, and commentaries multiplied for centuries. When Renaissance physicians finally attacked Avicenna, they were often attacking the habit of learning medicine from books rather than bodies, a habit the Canon's very success had encouraged.

Philosophy between faith and reason

Medicine was only half his achievement. His philosophical encyclopedia, the Book of Healing, reworked Aristotle into a system of his own, centered on a distinction between essence and existence and on a Necessary Existent from which all else flows. His famous flying man thought experiment, imagining a person created in midair with no sensation who would still be aware of his own self, remains a touchstone in the philosophy of mind. Latin scholastics, including Thomas Aquinas, absorbed and argued with Avicenna by name.

He was also fiercely contested. The theologian al-Ghazali charged Avicennan philosophers with incoherence and, on several doctrines, unbelief, opening a debate about reason and revelation that ran for centuries; later thinkers such as Ibn Rushd and generations of Persian commentators kept his system alive by attacking or refining it. That long argument is itself the measure of the man. Few writers have set the agenda for two civilizations at once, in two different disciplines, from a life spent largely on the road.
