Vienna, and a Marriage That Taught Her Ordnance
Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was born in Vienna in 1914 to a Jewish banking family and left school for the film studios in her teens. The Czech film Ecstasy of 1933 made her notorious across Europe, and shortly afterwards she married Friedrich Mandl, an Austrian munitions manufacturer whose clients included the Italian government. He was controlling and possessive, and he took her to business dinners where engineers and officers discussed guidance systems, remote control and the technical problems of torpedoes.
She listened. In 1937 she left him, reached London, and there met Louis B. Mayer, who signed her to MGM and renamed her Hedy Lamarr. Hollywood cast her almost entirely for her face, in a run of films that used her as an exotic ornament and rarely as an actor. She disliked the work and filled her evenings with a drafting table and a set of tools, treating invention as the part of her life that belonged to her rather than to a studio contract.
Two Instruments Playing the Same Roll
In 1940 she met the avant-garde composer George Antheil, who had once written a piece for sixteen synchronised player pianos. Radio-guided torpedoes were vulnerable because a single control frequency could be found and jammed. Their answer was to make the transmitter and receiver change frequency together in a rapid, prearranged pattern, so that an enemy listening on any one channel would hear only fragments. Antheil proposed a mechanism based on perforated rolls, coordinating a sequence of eighty-eight frequencies. The technique is now known as frequency hopping spread spectrum.
The patent was granted in August 1942 to Hedy Kiesler Markey and George Antheil, and they gave it to the government. The Navy declined to develop it, judging the mechanism impractical to fit inside a torpedo, and instead suggested that Lamarr could serve the war effort better by selling bonds, which she did to great effect. The underlying idea had partial precedents in earlier radio work, and their contribution was a specific and unusually complete implementation of it. Neither of them ever earned anything from the invention.
Shelved, Then Rediscovered
The patent expired before anything was built from it. Spread-spectrum techniques entered American military equipment in the early 1960s, and later became foundational to civilian technologies including certain mobile telephone standards, Bluetooth and wireless networking. The lineage is often drawn too directly. Engineers arrived at these systems through decades of separate work, and Lamarr and Antheil are best described as early holders of a key idea rather than as the direct parents of a modern chip. The distinction matters, and it takes nothing away from what they filed in 1942.
Her later life was difficult. She made few good films after the 1950s, withdrew almost entirely from public view, underwent repeated cosmetic surgery, was twice arrested for shoplifting and spent years in litigation. Recognition arrived at the very end: the Electronic Frontier Foundation gave her a pioneer award in 1997, and she reportedly received the news by telephone in seclusion. She died in Florida in January 2000, and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. She had outlived most of her contemporaries and nearly all of her fortune.
